My 5 Favorite Books so far in 2018!!

My 5 Favorite Books for the First Half of 2018!

Taking the 80 books I've read so far this year down to 5 was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Which is why this post is getting out a little bit late. I've been lucky to read a lot of good books this year, and I hope that trend continues for the last half of the year. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. First, let's see what some of my have been so far.

Fawkes by Nadine BrandesFawkes by Nadine Brandes

Thomas Fawkes is turning to stone, and the only cure to the Stone Plague is to join his father’s plot to assassinate the king of England.
Silent wars leave the most carnage. The wars that are never declared, but are carried out in dark alleys with masks and hidden knives. Wars where color power alters the natural rhythm of 17th century London. And when the king calls for peace, no one listens until he finally calls for death.
Fawkes is a historical fiction alternate history fantasy novel, that shows the Guy Fawkes to destroy parliament in a different way.

I couldn't get enough of this book and it was an immediate favorite!

Between the Blade and the Heart (Valkyrie, #1)Between the Blade and the Heart (Valkyrie #1) by Amanda Hocking

As one of Odin's Valkyries, Malin's greatest responsibility is to slay immortals and return them to the underworld. The balance of the world rests on her ability to carry out orders. But when Malin discovers that her mother spared the life of an immortal who was destined to die, her world is thrown into chaos.
Between the Blade and the Heart is the first in Valkyrie duology that is a new adult fantasy novel. This one reminded me at times of the Shadow Hunter world, but was also grittier and darker which I loved. This one is also in the new adult realm and has a bisexual main character.

Picture Us in the LightPicture Us In The Light by Kelly Loy Gilbert

Danny has been an artist for as long as he can remember and it seems his path is set, with a scholarship to RISD and his family's blessing to pursue the career he's always dreamed of. Still, contemplating a future without his best friend, Harry Wong, by his side makes Danny feel a panic he can barely put into words. Harry and Danny's lives are deeply intertwined and as they approach the one-year anniversary of a tragedy that shook their friend group to its core, Danny can't stop asking himself if Harry is truly in love with his girlfriend, Regina Chan.
This book was so unexpected for and I couldn't put it down. The mystery surrounding Danny's parents, to the real worry of letting your family down while you figure out what it is you want to do.
Picture Us in the Light also has an LGBT character, but I'll let you read it to figure out who it is.

My Review

A Passionate Hope: Hannah's Story (Daughters of the Promised Land, #4)A Passionate Hope: Hanah's Story by Jill Eileen Smith

Hannah and her husband, Elkanah, share a deep and abiding love, for each other, for their God, and for his tabernacle at Shiloh. Greatly disturbed by the corruption of the priests, they long for restoration and pray for a deliverer. Pressured by his family to take another wife, Elkanah marries Peninnah, who quickly begins to bear children. Disgraced and taunted by her husband's new wife, Hannah turns again to prayers that seem doomed to go unanswered. Do her devotion and kindness in the face of Peninnah's cruelty count for nothing? Why does God remain silent and indifferent to her pleas?
I loved learning about Hannah, she is someone that I've always been curious about, and I loved how she was captured in this story.

Lies That Bind (Anastasia Phoenix #2)Lies that Bind by Diana Rodriguez Wallach

What if saving yourself meant destroying everyone you love?
Still reeling from everything she learned while searching for her sister in Italy, Anastasia Phoenix is ready to call it quits with spies. But before any of them can leave espionage and their parents’ crimes behind them, a close friend turns up dead. No one is safe, not while Department D still exists. So Anastasia and her friends embark on a dangerous plan to bring down an entire criminal empire, using every Dresden Kid they can find.

While I'm sad to see this duology end, I loved it and I am so glad things turned out like they did.

Those were my top 5 books for the first half of the year. Have you read any of them?

*All of the books I did receive for review from publishers, but that didn't affect my opinions on them.
