Goodreads Summary:
If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

 My Review:

I'm reading this book along with Jessica (ReadingwithJessica)and a bunch of other bloggers/readers. You can join in if you would like. You can find more details about it here.

“I am a weapon made of flesh, a sword covered in skin. I was born to kill a king, to end a reign of terror before it can truly begin.”

I did end up listening to the last half of Red Queen on Audiobook before I started this one, just to have a refresher about certain things.

“But I can’t shake the feeling that, while they stand with me, there’s no one beside me. Even with an army at my back, I am still alone.”
Mare, I liked during certain parts of this book in other parts especially towards the end I just kept thinking "No, why are you doing this?". She just changed so much and was obsessed with a certain person which I didn't really understand because they had hardly spent any time with one another. Besides that though, I did like learning more about her power and seeing how she could control it and really do with it.

“We can’t choose who we love. I wish, more than anything, that we could.”

In this one, I really grew to love Cal. In the first one, I never trusted him because of obvious reasons but seeing him in this one, and the decisions he had to make, and what he had to do against 'his own people'. He's dealing with so much, and he's still trying to help others even though no one wants to trust him because of who he is.

The other side characters I absolutely loved were Shade, Cameron, and I'm on the fence about how I feel about Kilorn still.
Shade is just an amazing person in my mind, and I loved seeing him and his 'friends' interact.
Cameron is so so feisty and I can't wait to see what she is capable of once she has more control.
Kilorn I want to like I do, and on one hand, I do. He has no powers yet he still fights and is able to help out just as much as the others by causing a distraction. I'm not his biggest fan though, because of how he seems to be in love with Mare but didn't want to act on it till too late. In the first book, I knew they cared for each other, but I couldn't tell if it was just because they were both their or if they actually liked each other. Now it seems to have just been out of convenience.

“Mare of the Stilts died the day she fell onto a lightning shield. Mareena, the lost Silver princess, died in the Bowl of Bones. And I don’t know what new person opened her eyes on the Undertrain. I only know what she has been and what she has lost, and the weight of it is almost crushing.”

The other side characters, I don't have any strong feelings about after this book. I liked some more than others. I, of course, want to know more about Farley, and I do have some suspicions on what could happen in the next book, but I'm not positive on them yet.

Overall I did really like this book. All the side characters and the development of the story really made this one for me. Like I said Mare is changing, and I'm not really sure what's going on with that and why exactly she is making certain choices. I am so glad I'm continuing on with this series and I can't wait to see (read) what happens in Kings Cage.

“If I am a sword, I am a sword made of glass, and I feel myself beginning to shatter.”
