Happy New Year!

As you can probably tell from the title of this post I have some news. It's exciting news for Reading With Wrin. I have officially decided after over 3 years here on blogger to move the blog to a different website. That website is Wordpress!

What caused this change?

Truthfully I've always been a little frustrated with Blogger for different reasons over the years. Now with so much other stuff going on in my life, being frustrated about this blog isn't something I wanted to have continued on. I truly do love blogging, reviewing books and the whole book community and I don't plan on leaving it anytime soon.

So instead I have decided it's time for a new website with a new format! After trying out several different ones I decided on WordPress which is now where you will find all my book reviews, giveaway, and partnerships.

Click here to follow so you can continue to see more Reading With Wrin content!

My Review:
Thank you to the author for a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

Home for Christmas is three short Christmas stories.

Dirty Santa by Kayla Tirrell

Dirty Santa is the story of Jordin and how she is struggling after leaving college after one semester.

Overall I thought this story was okay. It was very short compared to the other two stories so I feel like a little bit was lost. I really did like the friendship that was shown between the Ben and Jordin that has played out throughout the year. Personally, I would have loved to see past Christmases to really see how their friendship evolved over time into what it was during this Christmas. I did like that family Christmas party was shown as those aren't something we see often in Christmas anthologies.

The Christmas Redeemer Spectacular by Daphne James Huff

Jamie is our main character in this one and she has recently become the almost sole provider in the family after a tragedy. She has had to drop out of college and give up her dream of being involved in the theater. She's had an ongoing crush with a guy who comes to the smoothie shop every day and when he asks to set up a flyer for a Christmas program they start talking.

Overall this was my favorite story of the three. Jamie's story is one that was done really well in a very short amount of pages. We learned what happened to her family recently and why they are struggling so much this Christmas. Christmas Redeemer Spectacular also has a really great girl friendship, and a possible love interest who is kind and helps her get back to what she loved doing.

I can't wait to read more by this author in the future.

The Night Sale by M.F. Lorson

The Night Sale is the story of Elizabeth who is a college Freshman and is now home for Christmas. Once home though she learns that her family business isn't doing so well and that her ex-boyfriends family is part of the problem.

This one really reminded me a little bit of the Netflix movie Christmas in the Smokies with the ex-boyfriend ending up playing a big part in the story.
Overall I really did enjoy this story. Elizabeth was a really likable character and I loved her parents.

Angela Carson wants nothing more than to be the third-generation to run her family’s holiday store, Heart of Christmas, successfully. They’ve weathered over sixty tourist seasons, major hurricanes, and urban sprawl, in their old decommissioned lighthouse. But the national chain that set up shop in their small North Carolina town of Pleasant Sands may be more than Heart of Christmas can survive.

Encouraged by her niece to ask Santa for help, Angela gives in and lets the words fly in a way that, if Santa were real, would no doubt land her on the naughty list. What’s the harm when it’s just a computer-generated response?

Geoff Paisley has been at his mother’s side running the mega-chain Christmas Galore for the last ten years. When his mother falls ill, Geoff promises to answer the town’s Dear Santa letters in her stead. Soon he realizes the woman he’s been corresponding with on Dear Santa is Angela. How could the woman that grates his every last nerve in person have intrigued him so deeply through those letters?

When Geoff reveals that he’s her Dear Santa, will Angela be able to set aside their very public feud to embrace the magic of the holiday and possibly find true love?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
My Review:

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

Dear Santa is one of those books that feels like a Hallmark movie. For any other time of the year I would dislike this, but for some reason during Christmas, I'm all for it.

This book is full of family, holiday cheer, and some drama.

Angela runs her family business, that has been around for several years and is inside of an old lighthouse. The business is called 'Heart of Christmas' and sells Christmas related items all year long. Angela is also a history buff especially when it comes to her hometown and helping other people know all the important and interesting details of it.
Things start changing in Angela's life though when a new megastore ran by Geoff comes to town. This new store is called 'Christmas Galore' and reminds me a little bit of like a Walmart/Menards type store just more Christmas related. Christmas Galore also has a Santa app where they answer kids Christmas letters to Santa. This is a big part of the story as Angela seeks Santa's help as Heart of Christmas starts struggling.

With Angela and Geoff facing off though and having some hostile feelings in the beginning things get a little interesting whenever they end up interacting. As times goes on and they really start to get to know each other things start changing and they start understanding why each other have done certain things.

Overall I really enjoyed this story. It truly did remind me of a Hallmark movie at times. I liked the character growth we saw in both the main characters (Angela and Geoff) and in the side characters. I think it was a great showing of how things can get skewed at times with family business and how lines get crossed and other things get overlooked. I'm really looking forward to reading more by this author next year for Christmas!

I did kind of dislike how rushed the last 30 or so pages felt. Did anyone else feel like it was rushed?
This one I'm really hoping is a nice contemporary, that isn't too fluffy. Yes I know that's contradicting themes, but let's face it you can have contemporary without it being super lovey.

This is the first 2019 historical fiction YA book that I'm excited for! With so many good ones released this year in 2018, I cannot wait to see what 2019 brings.

All is Fair has a boarding school, WWI, and possible a love across social circles? Not sure about that last one but I'm very excited about a boarding school and WWI being the main focuses. I've not seen a lot of YA books around this time period so I'm really hoping this is the start of seeing more of that.

As a Catholic finding Bibles that not only have all the books of the Bible but are also more fun or explain things, better is hard to find. This one does exactly that! Each page has something on it you can either color while your reading, or the chance to write to the side.

This means that you have endless creative space to express yourself in the Bible for a change!
I'm absolutely in love with all of the art in the Bible it really helps bring out some popular lines while also making pretty pictures as seen in the photo above. The line spacing is just the right amount to write comfortably without it being too big.
While I haven't yet colored anything due to not having any colored pencil's yet, I do know that once I get some I will be coloring all of the pretty pictures as I read this Bible!

The Inspire Catholic Bible will also be a great thing for me to have as in 2019 I want to read both the Old and New Testament all the way through instead of just chapters here and there. If you have any suggestions on how to break up the Bible into manageable pieces for every day. Right now I'm thinking about 5 pages every day should make it possible for me to read the entire Bible in a year!

I'm so thankful to have received this Bible and I cannot wait to keep using it in the New Year!
5 Books From The Year I Was Born

After a few days break to finish my finals and finally get caught up on some sleep I desperately needed its time to get back into BLOGMAS!!

Last year during Blogmas I challenged myself to read 5 books from the year I was born, which was 1993. Now at the beginning of this challenge, I knew it would be tough. I, however, was not prepared for how tough it would actually be for me.

How I Did:

I managed to read 2 out of 5 books.

This one sadly fell flat for me I didn't care for it and found myself wishing for it to be over as soon as possible.

The Client by John Grisham

This was my favorite book I read from this challenge. The multiple pov's really added to and I loved learning about the legal system.

What Now?

Now that I've reviewed what's happened over the past year with this challenge it's time to decide if I'm going to try and continue reading the other three books. The answer to that is.....

No. I tried to read both The Virgin Suicides and Durable Goods and I just couldn't get past the first few pages in them. I do want to try and read I'll Be Seeing You, but I'm not going to be doing it as apart of this challenge.

The whole point of this challenge was to try and get me to read backlist books, and I did. But I also found that I wasn't enjoying myself and that's not what reading is about. Reading is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. While I'm thankful for having tried to do this challenge, it's also one that I don't see myself repeating in 2019.

to be kind . . . and why does it sometimes feel like the hardest thing
in the world to do? High school senior Kendall, who just returned from a
life-changing semester in Europe, and Max, who is drifting his way

they witness a tragic accident in New York City during the holiday
season. Racked with guilt, the two accept a dare to perform random acts

history together from back home, closer and closer as they explore a
vibrant city filled with other people’s stories and secrets.

Kendall

My Review:

Thank you to Edelweiss and Harper Collins for an e-arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Together at Midnight is a New York story that reminded me of a few others that happen before Christmas. This one takes place after Christmas though and goes through the new year. We follow two main characters Kendall and Max who are challenged to do 7 good deeds for others with no money spent after they have seen something horrible happen to someone else that deeply affects them.
Along with this challenge, we learn a lot about them and what happened in the past and how exactly they know each other. Kendall has just returned from a study abroad and Max has taken a year off from college to save money. With both of them struggling with what to do next this challenge was a perfect distraction that also ended up helping them deal with what they saw happen.
We also get to see what the people they helped were thinking and how it really did change how they looked at things that day.

Overall I really loved this story! I loved being able to see what the person they helped thought and how it was able to show that even if we don't think we changed someone's day we most likely did. Max and Kendall's friendship was really nice as well, and even though things were a little awkward it was realistic for a change. I loved both of their families who were present and around for a change. There were so many different parts of this story and a lot of them were actually realistic in my opinion. Every character had some sort of flaw, but they knew them and they had accepted them and were trying to do better with them.
I think this is a perfect read for the beginning of the year!

3) First Christmas memory

I have several. My most recent is when we got to on a family trip to ride on a train that was made to look like the "Polar Express".

5) Your Go-To genre to read at Christmas

6) Is there a holiday tradition you've never tried but want to?

I'd really like to spend more of my holiday season helping others. Why I might not be able to donate my time this year, I want to make time to be able to donate money to a worthy cause. (If you know of any please let me know.)

Goodreads Summary:
It’s Christmas, and for the first time in years the entire Birch family will be under one roof. Even Emma and Andrew’s elder daughter—who is usually off saving the world—will be joining them at Weyfield Hall, their aging country estate. But Olivia, a doctor, is only coming home because she has to. Having just returned from treating an epidemic abroad, she’s been told she must stay in quarantine for a week…and so too should her family.

For the next seven days, the Birches are locked down, cut off from the rest of humanity—and even decent Wi-Fi—and forced into each other’s orbits. Younger, unabashedly frivolous daughter Phoebe is fixated on her upcoming wedding, while Olivia deals with the culture shock of being immersed in first-world problems.

As Andrew sequesters himself in his study writing scathing restaurant reviews and remembering his glory days as a war correspondent, Emma hides a secret that will turn the whole family upside down.

In close proximity, not much can stay hidden for long, and as revelations and long-held tensions come to light, nothing is more shocking than the unexpected guest who’s about to arrive…

---------------------------------------------------------------------
My Review:

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
Emma and Andrew the patriarchs of the family are excited for the family to all be back together for the first time in years for the holidays. The one downside they will all be quarantined together in one house for a week in order to make sure daughter Olivia doesn't infect anyone with a disease she has been helping treat in Africa.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
The quarantine wouldn't be a problem, but in recent years this family has been drifting apart in a sense. They all have been keeping secrets from one another and there is definitely a divide in the family over who is close and who is just plain icy towards one another. Will this week bring them closer together or break them farther apart? Or maybe both?

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
Overall I did enjoy this book. Getting to see this story from each different family members perspective was really nice and helped the story grow in a way that felt like I was really watching a movie or tv show play out in my head that shows a family over the holidays.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
I loved seeing things the most from Olivia and a mystery person that you will just have to wait to meet.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
I found myself really getting annoyed with Andrew and Phoebe. Andrew was the typical jerkish food critic reporter that never seems to be happy. Phoebe is someone that is smart, yet doesn't use that and instead settles for less and to marry rich in order to fit into a type of mold she seems to think should be filled.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
Emma is a character that I really loved. She reminds me so much of other moms who have given up a lot in order to have a family.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
The main driving force behind this book is also the secrets that the family has kept from one another and how they are now all coming out throughout the week. From small little misunderstandings to big secrets that will have life changing consequences for all of them there was never a dull moment while reading this book.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
I do think everyone will be able to relate and love at least one character in this book and I can't wait to read something else by this author.

Thank you to Ave Maria Press for sending me a copy of this advent book!

Today is the second official day of advent! While I might be a day late with making this post, there is still plenty of time for you to get caught up with The Living Gospel advent daily devotional.

Why do I like this advent book so much?
Mainly because of how almost everything is in one little book.
Each day is broken up into six different parts (Begin, Pray, Listen, Why It Matters, Act, & Pray). This is split up over two pages, and covers several different bible verses, why it should be important to us, and ends with another short prayer to help us keep present with Emmanuel.

My favorite thing about this book is how short of a devotional it is. It will most likely take you 5 minutes at max to read the daily devotional and spend time really absorbing what was talked about that day. As someone who is a college student and is going into finals week having something that is short to read that gets me away from my studies for a few minutes is very appreciated. It also brings me back to the present and helps remind me to slow down and really enjoy the holiday season.

When Wendy Harper inherits her family's beachside cottage in Seaside, Maine, she sees it as a way to finally pay off the debts that have mounted since her husband died. But before it can be sold, the neglected property must be renovated. She and her 12-year-old son Jackson move in--temporarily, she reminds him--in order to do the work themselves, even though Christmas is coming. The charming town, along with local craftsman Caleb Colton, pulls on both Wendy and Jackson, who even registers himself for school in a bid to get his mom to move them there permanently. Wendy knows that the most responsible thing to do is to sell the cottage and return to Ohio, but the lure of the sea is hard to resist.

Join award-winning author Melody Carlson for a Christmas story that will warm your heart and have you dreaming of your own enchanted seaside holiday.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
My Review:
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">A Christmas by the Sea is a book about a mother and son who have gone back to a place where the mom summered with her grandparents and has now inherited after the death of her grandfather.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">Wendy and her son Jackson are going from Ohio to Maine in order to get to the cottage and fix it up for it to be sold, or at least that's what Wendy has planned. Jackson, on the other hand, wants this to become their new home and for them to have a fresh start after everything that happened.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">Overall enjoyed this book. As soon as I saw the cover of this book I immediately wanted to read it. I really enjoyed the mom and son relationship in this book as it's not something we get to see a lot, especially where they are close. Wendy and Jackson are two characters that I absolutely loved, Jackson was so full of hope and energy and it was infectious after a while. Wendy while being stuck in a hard place for most of the book with financial responsibilities really started to enjoy what Jackson was doing and saying and started to realize that maybe things weren't so hopeless which I really liked. It was nice to see a kid change the opinion of a parent in a positive way about something.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">The side characters I really enjoyed as well and for this being such a short book we do get to know some of them fairly well.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">The last 2 pages though absolutely ruined the whole book for me in a way. I could have done without that personally. I am also starting to feel like Carlson doesn't know how to end certain books without two people rushing into something that's extremely serious.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Summary:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">For fans of television shows Black Mirror and Westworld, this compelling, mind-bending novel is a twisted look into the future, exploring how far we will go to remake ourselves into the perfect human specimen and what it means to be human at all.

Set in our world, spanning the near to distant futures, Stronger, Faster, and More Beautiful is a novel made up of six interconnected stories that ask how far we will go to remake ourselves into the perfect human specimens, and how hard that will push the definition of "human."

This extraordinary work explores the amazing possibilities of genetic manipulation and life extension, as well as the ethical quandaries that will arise with these advances. The results range from the heavenly to the monstrous. Deeply thoughtful, poignant, horrifying, and action-packed, Arwen Elys Dayton's Stronger, Faster, and More Beautiful is groundbreaking in both form and substance.
Goodreads Summary:
From debut author Peter Stone comes a heart-stopping, pulse-pounding political thriller that’s perfect for fans of Ally Carter and House of Cards.

When recent high school graduate Cameron Carter lands an internship with Congressman Billy Beck in Washington, DC, he thinks it is his ticket out of small town captivity. What he lacks in connections and Beltway polish he makes up in smarts, and he soon finds a friend and mentor in fellow staffer Ariel Lancaster.

That is, until she winds up dead.

As rumors and accusations about her death fly around Capitol Hill, Cameron’s low profile makes him the perfect candidate for an FBI investigation that he wants no part of. Before he knows it—and with his family’s future at stake—he discovers DC’s darkest secrets as he races to expose a deadly conspiracy.

If it doesn’t get him killed first.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
My Review:

"It’s the presidents, the Hancocks, the loud ones who get noticed. No one pays attention to the people in the background."

I first wanted to read this book, because it's about an intern in Washinton D.C. and with how I've become invested in elections and what politicians are doing in the past two years, I wanted to read a book that covered that as well.

The Perfect Candidate did not disappoint. Cameron Carter lives in a small town in California and works in his free time at his dad's landscaping business. After his high school graduation and before he starts going to the local community college, he's decided to try and intern for his local congressman nicknamed BIB. He shockingly gets the internship and goes to Washington for the summer. While there he makes friends with the other interns and staff and gets sucked into a mission of sorts after one of the interns mysteriously dies.

"If you’ve learned something so far this summer, I hope it’s that people win government contracts for all kinds of reasons."

Overall I loved this story. Cameron is a very realistic character, he struggles with balancing his life back in California and keeping in touch with friends, while also fully immersing himself in what is happening for him this summer in Washington. Things got even more complicated for him the longer he was in Washington as he got sucked into helping find out something that changed hundreds of people lives once it was made public. The mystery of what happened to the fellow staffer was fascinating to me and was dealt with in a real way, where people think about it for a few days and then it goes on the back burner and hardly ever gets mentioned again.

“You’re an intern who is going to make history,” he said. “I’ll settle for an intern who saves his dad’s business,”

For me, this book was very realistic when it came to how people deal with loss, as well as trying to balance out the two different lives we can live at the same time. Cameron was a character that I truly did like, and he was smart and dumb at the same time just like a real person. He never had all of the answers and he trusted people he shouldn't have at times and confided in people that were good at other times. I cannot give this book enough praise and I can't wait to see what the author writes next.

P.S. To Mr. Stone does that ending mean we are going to get more of these characters? I sure hope so because I adored them.

Goodreads Summary:
A lady’s maid and a valet become entangled in a yuletide counterfeiting scheme in this romantic Christmas YA adventure.
1817. The happy chaos of the Yuletide season has descended upon the country estate of Shackleford Park in full force, but lady’s maid Kate Darby barely has the time to notice. Between her household duties, caring for her ailing mother, and saving up money to someday own a dress shop, her hands are quite full. Matt Harlow is also rather busy. He’s performing double-duty, acting as valet for both of the Steeple brothers, two of the estate’s holiday guests.

Falling in love would be a disaster for either of them. But staving off their feelings for each other becomes the least of their problems when a devious counterfeiting scheme reaches the gates of Shackleford Park, and Kate and Matt are unwittingly swept up in the intrigue. Full of sweetness, charm, and holiday shenanigans, Carols and Chaos is perfect for fans of Jane Austen and Downton Abbey.

I love being able to see points of views from servants in historical fiction books. You get to know so much more about the people that they are serving as well as how the house is run, and the other servants themselves who more often than not have far more exciting lives than the people with money. Carols and Chaos did not disappoint with that part of the story.
Kate and Matt both have a lot of responsibilities for there employers (we first met them in Suitors and Sabotage ) and making sure that they are well kept and when need be also help take care of household duties. Which there are a lot of as it is the Christmas season, which also brings about us meeting and interacting with the other servants. I really wish we had gotten to interact more with them at times, but sadly we do not as Kate and Matt are always so busy with other things. We do however get to see a future highly superstitious moments with the cook and head housekeeper, and the butler who was a surly old man.

Overall I did really enjoy this story, even if it did seem a little disjointed at times. There were so many different parts and things didn't really start to come together for me until the last 30% of the book. That 30% though was what saved this book for me. Not only do we finally start getting answers to what had been happening, but we also got a good mystery!
The mystery surrounded Johnny who was a friend of Ben's who works as a footman. Johnny ends up getting taken for a fool it seems and from there, things escalate as Johnny tries to get back what is rightfully his.
Kate and Matt become determined to find Johnny and in the process end up in some precarious situations. These situations though ended up being my favorite parts of the book, as we really see how much they have grown to care for each other.

Thank you to NetGalley and SourcebooksFire for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

This book was far creepier than I was expecting it to be. Just wow.

Marianne's life is drastically changing due to her parents. This life change starts making strange things happen, first Marianne starts losing things, and then she starts losing pieces of her memory as well. The more time goes on the more things start getting strange and the less she remembers about certain situations. She doesn't start putting things together until her mom leaves her with her aunt while she goes and checks herself into the hospital. With this happening Marianne is now convinced that she is the problem and that she is the one going crazy as she is having more and more trouble focusing on school and finals. With a little help from her new friend Ron though she is able to start figuring out what is happening and it appears to not be human.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I needed to know what was going to happen next and what in the world was happening to Marianne. I loved how her new friend Ron stuck by her side through most of it, and helped her figure things out the more scary things got for Marianne. Another thing I liked was how even though Marianne's parents were going through things they still made sure she was okay, and they tried to work together through the aunt to make sure that she stayed safe with all of this strange things happening.

One thing that I found really frustrating was the exam portion of this book, I know it was a little thing, but for some reason the fact that she was still taking them even though all this other stuff was going on and we never saw her studying bothered me for some reason. Another thing that bothered me was how clueless the aunt seemed to be about certain things that were happening in her own house. Like really, come on now, we all know you're smarter than this you've lived alone for years you know certain things don't just happen.

Dark Beneath The Ice kept me on my toes throughout the book with the need to know what happened next, and I can't wait to read Berube's next book!

Elizabeth Lavenza hasn't had a proper meal in weeks. Three years ago I read the original Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and I was a little underwhelmed by it personally. What was missing in it for me was found in this book! The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is incredibly creepy yet heartwarming at times. Which was what was missing for me in the original.
White makes it so you not only care about Elizabeth and several of the other side characters, but that you also care for Victor and what he had created by the end. How she does this I'm not sure, because it seemed like my opinions on certain characters was constantly changing depending on what chapter I was on. The characters are what drives this book along, and I've learned that that's what I love in books right now.

Elizabeth who is our main character has such an interesting back story that we learn slowly throughout the book, and I loved her as a character. Is she terrifying at times, yes, yes she is and I absolutely loved that about her. She was willing to do what she had to in order to have a good life with the family that took her in even if it meant encouraging certain other things at times. Elizabeth not only makes up stories to satisfy others, but she also puts on a bit of a persona to be who Victor needs her to be in order to keep the peace between him and his parents.

"Nothing surfaced from the black depths of the river. It kept its secrets. I would keep mine. And Victor's, too. "

While this would be a good thing, it takes a darker turn with Victor and Elizabeth and thing's just keep escalating the other Victor gets. This puts Elizabeth in some uncomfortable and questionable positions that make her vulnerable to certain things that Victor is doing.

"You begin existing the day we met. You are my Elizabeth, and that is all that matters."

Victor truly worried me from the beginning, and I even wonder if he could be a sociopath at times because of how he acted. Having said that though, I also found myself being worried about him when Elizabeth was worried about him and hoping that he was okay. There was a bit of a weird possessiveness that he felt towards Elizabeth, that just kept getting more concerning the longer the book went on. Which added a whole new level of creepy, and excitement at the same time. ( I can't believe I just said that.)

"She loved it because I told it just for her. It was not entirely the truth. But so little of what I told anyone ever was. I had ceased feeling guilty long ago. Words and stories were tools to elicit the desired reactions in others, and I was an expert craftswoman."

Justine is a character who I wanted to protect at all costs, and I couldn't help constantly thinking that she should run from that house immediately and find a safer place to live. Yet I also knew she wasn't going to, she truly cared for Victor's younger siblings as if they were her own. I think that's part of what made me love her so much, also the fact that we see Elizabeth having a real friend it seems for the first time ever.
Last but certainly not least we must have a 'Monster' or it wouldn't be Frankenstein. While I cared about the 'Monster' in the original, I cared about them even more in this book by the end and I wish we had gotten to see more of them.

"I yearned for the freedom I anticipated.Freedom from the monster.Freedom from secrets.Freedom from the fear of having nothing."

Besides the character driven story we also have a bit of an added mystery that's in the background for most of the book, and it's about Elizabeth's family, and past before she came to be with Victor and his family. This is the only part of the book that seemed a little rushed to me, but that could just be because I love finding out about people's family history's and things like that.

"Madame Frankenstein had brought me out of the darkness and into the light."

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">
Overall I really loved this book, and I cannot wait to be able to go back and finish White's other historical fiction series that I want to marathon over my Christmas break! Synopsis:

A high school “American Psycho.”
SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET.
SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.
Along the banks of the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.
And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.
The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Handsome. Charming. Intelligent. The star quarterback of the football team. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.
He is also a psychopath.
A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the ruined St. Francis Abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.
As the victim toll mounts, it becomes crystal clear that someone has to stop Beau Devereaux.
And that someone will pay with their life.

He lives a very private, virtually reclusive lifestyle, preferring to spend time with a close-knit group of friends than be in the spotlight.

He is an author and poet with a penchant for telling stories that delve into the dark side of the human psyche. He likes to explore the evil that exists, not just in the world, but right next door behind a smiling face.

Photography, making wine, and helping endangered species are just some of his interests. Lucas is an expert archer and enjoys jazz, blues, and classical music.
One of his favorite quotes is: “It’s better to be silent than be a fool.” ~Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird)

Goodreads Summary:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Still struggling with nightmares from the past summer, Terry tries to bury her secret guilt and enjoy her family’s first Christmas in Devonshire. But when a murdered man is found with a postcard addressed to her, Terry fears the repercussions from that fateful night in Egypt are becoming a reality.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">After she receives a coded message from Awad, Terry and her best friend Maude are thrown into the hunt for a lost medallion, an artifact that possesses a great power—and a gruesome destiny.
<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">Thank you to Xpressobooktours for the free copy and being able to be apart of the blog tour.
<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">Full disclosure I didn't realize this was the third book in the series until I went to start reading it. Some of my opinions on it will not fully reflect the series nor should it stop you from starting the series.
<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">I absolutely loved the history parts of this book. I grew up loving everything about Egypt and I am so glad to finally be seeing it in a YA series. I know several middle-grade series our about Egypt but I personally haven't seen many ya ones, if I'm missing them please let me know what they are so I can read them!
<div style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">A lot of the relationships I found a little confusing at times to figure out who was who and how they were all connected. I did figure this all out about 20% into the book. This was completely my fault though because I hadn't read the first two books. I also found the Illuminati a little confusing as well, because of how secretive everything about it was.

What I liked.
I really did like the history as I mentioned before. I also liked how the main character Terry does use a prosthetic leg and that is made to be normal, no one was weirded out by it including her boyfriend as they get more serious and started talking about certain things. Terry's best friends are amazing and I adore them. They are supportive and informative and just jump right in and find ways to help Terry solve the problem that they are being faced with. Awad was a character I was a little unsure of at first, because of certain things and I really didn't trust him fully because of how secretive he was being about certain things.

What I felt meh about.
How secretive everything was about certain things. I really didn't see a point in half of it because of how dangerous things got by the end. People needed to know the secrets, but couldn't for reasons that I kind of understand, but I still don't like the reasons.

Overall I did enjoy this book. I will say that this is a series that builds off of each book so it should be read in order to fully understand everything. <span style="font-family: "times new roman";">I do want to read the first two books in the series and reread this one because I do think I missed a lot of things because I just didn't understand what was going on. I will review the first two books when I read them, and possibly add more to this review after I have reread it.
He’s desperate for adventure.

Sixteen-year-old Reiko Mori’s family has clashed with the Markows in a clandestine search for the famed Lover’s Kiss Ruby, ever since their ancestors killed each other over it centuries ago in Japan.

Now, after pulling off a successful museum heist, Reiko’s finally going to be the one who finds the jewel.

Even better? She’s just arranged a study date with hot-but-sheltered sculptor Levi Green to work on their English project. Things are looking good.

Until a mysterious third party attacks Reiko and Levi, intent on stealing her clues to the ruby.

Until Reiko discovers the Lover’s Kiss is actually in Europe, an ocean away.

And until goofy, affable Levi Green turns out to be Levi Markow, mortal enemy number one.

Plan B it is: reluctantly team up with Levi to find the priceless gem before the shadowy and deadly group on the jewel’s trail finds it first.

And if history is gonna repeat itself with the kissing, running, and screwing over, see which one of them comes out on top.

Excerpt:

Levi rubbed his arm, his expression wary. “Reiko Mori, I presume.”

“‘I presume?’” Reiko dropped into a fighter’s crouch. “You’re missing the British accent.”

Levi put his hands up in a pathetic imitation of defensive position. Her cat could have landed a punch through those gaps. “And you’re missing the reality where we aren’t about to have an MMA showdown.”

Reiko smirked but lowered her hands. “Because I’d wipe the floor with your ass.”

“Says Hit-Girl masquerading as the resident shy chick all these years. Nice James Bond alter ego you got going on.”

“I am shy.” She grabbed a dishtowel and whipped it at his head. It fluttered to the counter, far short of its mark.

Levi snorted.

“Being around my sworn enemies tends to knock it out of me. Besides, you’re one to talk, Artsy Boy. Had everyone fooled.” Including stupid me. She pushed him backwards out of the kitchen, shoving him again and again until his back hit the wall next to the front door.

Levi fended off her next blow. The sweep of his arm knocking her hands away left behind a familiar faint hint of rubbing alcohol. She’d watched him use it to remove clay from his hands at school many times. Could she be more pathetically tuned into this guy?

Levi held out his hand, palm up. “Hand over the locket, sweetheart. The real one this time.”

“Sweetheart?” She pulled herself up to her full height. “Could you be more stereotypical bad guy?”

“He could have a mustachio to twirl,” Aviva said, from her avid spectator spot hanging over the bannister.

“True,” Reiko said.

Levi rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m not the one blowing kisses before screwing people over. That a move passed down through the generations with you chicks? Think that adds weight to my family being the wronged party here, Mata Hari.”

“Mata…? Argh!” She snatched up the poker.

“Go ahead, brain me.” Levi turned out his pockets in a huff. “No ruby. Just lint. I’d hate you to pointlessly commit murder except, oh yeah. You Moris are bloodthirsty!”

“Better a bloodthirsty Mori than a cowardly, backstabbing Markow!” Reiko jabbed the poker at him.

Levi grabbed the other end, the two of them engaged in a furious tug-of-war for possession. He let go suddenly, sending Reiko staggering back a few steps

Reiko flung open the door and pointed outside. With the poker. “Get. Out.”

Levi held his ground for a minute but must have decided she meant business because he grabbed his shoes. “This isn’t over.”

“You’ll get the locket over my dead body, Lion Cub.”

“Great! Can’t wait to pry it out of your cold, rigor-mortised hands,” he snapped, and stomped out of the house, slamming the door behind him.

“Shit,” said Aviva, “this is really gonna put a crimp in your dating plans.”

They all struggled as friends and in their personal lives and because of that it made the book for more real and like this really could have been someone's life which is what I love about historical fiction when its done really well and is something that doesn't always happen in YA.

The mob lifestyle was fascinating to me and I loved how we were just slow given little details about it we weren't told everything at once and instead were given details slowly over time or just little hints which you had to piece together yourselves.

The romance parts of this book I didn't mind. I thought at times the girls were being a bit ridiculous and too risky but that's to be expected especially with Cordelia and Letty as they weren't used to the city life.

Goodreads Summary:
In the bestselling tradition of Hidden Figures and The Wives of Los Alamos, comes a riveting novel of the everyday women who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II

“What you see here, what you hear here, what you do here, let it stay here.”

In November 1944, eighteen-year-old June Walker boards an unmarked bus, destined for a city that doesn’t officially exist. Oak Ridge, Tennessee has sprung up in a matter of months—a town of trailers and segregated houses, 24-hour cafeterias, and constant security checks. There, June joins hundreds of other young girls operating massive machines whose purpose is never explained. They know they are helping to win the war, but must ask no questions and reveal nothing to outsiders.

The girls spend their evenings socializing and flirting with soldiers, scientists, and workmen at dances and movies, bowling alleys and canteens. June longs to know more about their top-secret assignment and begins an affair with Sam Cantor, the young Jewish physicist from New York who oversees the lab where she works and understands the end goal only too well, while her beautiful roommate Cici is on her own mission: to find a wealthy husband and escape her sharecropper roots. Across town, African-American construction worker Joe Brewer knows nothing of the government’s plans, only that his new job pays enough to make it worth leaving his family behind, at least for now. But a breach in security will intertwine his fate with June’s search for answers.

When the bombing of Hiroshima brings the truth about Oak Ridge into devastating focus, June must confront her ideals about loyalty, patriotism, and war itself.

I think by now we can all just know that anything to do with WWII I will read. So when I saw this book I knew I had to read it and soon!

Atomic City Girls follows several different people as they live and work in Tennesse in Atomic City. With June being the one we spend the most time with. We get to see things from Joe Brewer as well and see the segregated side of the city, and the struggles they were facing.

Atomic City was a not so well kept secret to most of the surrounding area. With people going in and out constantly and segregation and only the top military and scientist personal knowing what was happening a lot of mystery and speculation surrounded everyone. With this speculation came high tensions, and hot tempers at times.

Overall I did enjoy this book, but certain things about it I would have liked to know more about. I personally felt like this became more of a romance book then what was actually happening in the city and why it was happening. So many secrets were being kept and while June knew them no one else did that she was close to besides Sam who had some problems. Truthfully I wanted so much more for June and yet I understood why she stayed in the situation she was in as well.

Sam became one of those characters that I wanted to know more about, yet one that I also found myself despising at times. He was such a jerk the more time went on and I just wanted him to leave because of how unhappy he was with what was happening.

I would have loved to see more things from Joe's perspective and I really did favor him as more time went on. I found it fascinating to learn more about a part of history that isn't talked about seeing it alongside something that is talked about a little more.

I want to keep learning more about this time in history so if you have any recommendations for either nonfiction or fiction please tell me them!

My Review:

Thank you to Wednesday Books for the free e-book and the chance to participate in this blog tour!

I Do Not Trust You was a book I knew I had to read as soon as I read the summary. A teenage girl who has a lot of knowledge about history and artifacts, and is now traveling the world following a map that hardly anyone knows how to translate. Sign me up because that sounds a lot like Indian Jones who I love. Plus I have been waiting a very long time for a female version of him.

In I Do Not Trust You we get to see things from both M's point of view and Ash's point of view.

Memphis who goes by 'M' is a character I really liked. She is feisty and knows how to hold her own in multiple ways of life, while also being extremely unsure about other things. She has recently become an orphan and because of that is now feeling rather isolated because of who she is now living with. She cannot wait until she is done with high school and can move away to college where she will be with people who knew her parents better.

Ashwin who goes by 'Ash' is a character I was really unsure of at first. I really felt like M does for most of the book and even towards the end, I didn't fully trust him. I did find him fascinating though, and I loved his parts of the story. I think having his point of view really does help make it easier to understand what is happening and how these things are happening. He is in a cult so that added a different element to the story, and was fascinating to me to learn about.

We do get to see a lot of different places from the rainforest, to bigger cities like New Orleans, a convent and so many more places. We get to see Ash and M follow the secret map as the look for pieces of an 'ancient mythical being'. Throughout this journey, we get to learn more about both of their childhoods and what has given them the abilities to interpret the map and the hieroglyphics.
This was the part I really liked learning about Ash as he has had very specific training in the past few years through his cult which was really rather intense and a bit much at times like all cults are. While with M she grew up around it because of her parents so she has a lot of connections, but also had a storyline we are more used to seeing (Indiana Jones).

Overall I really liked this book. The history and adventure part of it were great. Seeing all the different places and how they were able to decipher the hieroglyphics they found in all the places was truly an adventure. From the two different cult's we get to see and learn about, to the little side stories of both the characters I couldn't get enough honestly. I truly enjoyed this book so much and I really hope we get to continue on with these characters!

P.S. I would love to see this get made into a movie or web series or something like that. It would be a great way for so many people to learn things about different cultures.

A story about the fight for equal rights in America's favorite arena: the baseball field!
Every boy in the neighborhood knows Katy Gordon is their best pitcher, even though she's a girl. But when she tries out for Little League, it's a whole different story. Girls are not eligible, period. It is a boy's game and always has been. It's not fair, and Katy's going to fight back. Inspired by what she's learning about civil rights in school, she sets out to prove that she's not the only girl who plays baseball. With the help of friendly librarians and some tenacious research skills, Katy discovers the forgotten history of female ballplayers. Why does no one know about them? Where are they now? And how can one ten-year-old change people's minds about what girls can do?

Set in 1957--the world of Sputnik and Leave It to Beaver, saddle shoes and "Heartbreak Hotel"--Out of Left Field is both a detailed picture of a fascinating historic period and a timelessly inspiring story about standing up for equality at any age.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall I absolutely loved this book! Katy was a character that is so smart, yet still able to be a child at the same time. Katy's mom is a professor at a local university and her dad while divorced from her mom is working for the military and is helping create a big part of Galactical History. Because of these things, Katy not only has the world at her fingertips she also has support to be anything that she can be. With a little help from her mom, Katy is able to start fighting the Little League rules and learns a lot about women in baseball and why they were pushed out.

If you loved the movie a League of Their Own then you will adore this book as well. I loved learning about so many different baseball players and the achievements they made. From desegregation of players to getting benched the whole game these women while always pushed to the side showed that girls are just as good as boys if not been when it comes to sports.
